Who we are, why we exist, and what we stand for
SHIFA Afghan is a nonprofit organization founded as a Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation, serving vulnerable communities in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. At SHIFA Afghan, health is not just a service, it’s a right.
The organization addresses healthcare accessibility gaps where basic medical attention remains unavailable in many Afghan communities, particularly in rural areas. Countless families across Kunar Province have no access to a doctor, no way to safely deliver a child, and no means of treatment when illness strikes. SHIFA Afghan exists to change that, one community at a time.
We envision an Afghanistan with universal health access regardless of geography, where mothers give birth safely, communities gain the knowledge to prevent disease, and rural populations achieve sustained healthcare and dignity. We believe that where you are born should not determine whether you live or die from a preventable illness.
Our goal is to establish health centers across Kunar Province to tackle urgent health needs and ensure quality healthcare becomes a right rather than a privilege. Beginning with the Dr. Zamani Basic Health Center, we are building a network of care that will serve approximately 15,000 Afghans across 8 villages in the region, with plans to expand as funding and need grow.
We deliver primary healthcare that combines curative treatments, preventative services, health promotion, and community health education. Our Basic Health Center (BHC)-plus facility is designed to fill the care gap where larger hospitals are unavailable, offering everything from general outpatient care and maternal health services to mental health counseling and mobile outreach to remote villages. We also invest in the local workforce, training healthcare professionals with a strong emphasis on gender inclusion.
